Christmas 1996 - the one Christmas that I shall never ever forget. I retired in November and had my farewell party on 15 December. It was a happy time after 31 years service and I was looking forward to retirement. We had moved into a new house and everything was perfect. At the party many of my old friends attended including my daughter and son. I was disappointed that his wife of three years was not present as I can say, and I am not being bias, that she was a true beauty. She and my son were deliriously happy. He explained that she was sorry not to be there as she was feeling very much under the weather. The party over we returned home and began planning a large family Christmas. It was not until the 21st that the bombshell arrived. It started with my son on the telephone saying that his wife was in hospital, in a coma, with a brain tumour and unlikely to recover. My wife took it exceptionally bad as in the three years they had become like mother and daugher. They were already best friends. We made our way to the hospital and there she was. With her long blonde hair and spectacular looks, she gave the appearance of a sleeping beauty awaiting the kiss that would awaken her from her deep sleep. The kiss came, but to no avail. She lingered for two days - not in any pain - and as beautiful as ever. On 23 December 1996, Jane died without opening her eyes. I had seen death many times during my service and many relatives pass away including my parents. However, the loss of a beautiful young woman in the prime of life is hard to take and I can say that Christmas that year was a very sad time. My only consolation and strength when I think of those few days, is that Jane shall forever remain young and beautiful in our minds and hearts. May God rest her soul....................

there were two - the one when my dad gave me my first 22 rifle, a
" real " archery set and a beagle hound puppy named " Niki " telling me I was old enough to start learning the ancient ways of my ancestors.

the second was when my future wife gave me a pair of black/white Scottie dogs with magnets when placed together could attract and do tricks. she had a note saying these were like us -- neither was good without the other. thirty years later she was buried with one and I still have the other

It was several years ago. My children were still very young. They were all up at 4AM. Their mom & I were hoping they'd go back to bed, but they were too excited. So, we just went with the flow & let them open their presents. I think we all had to go back to sleep awhile later, but that was a priceless moment.
