Try "The City Of Lost Children". One of the guys who directed it also directed Amelie. It is similar to Amelie in so far as it is wonderfully visual and fantastical.
Also excellent is "Battle Royale". But I don't know if it would be your cup of tea. I think it may be banned in the Us and you can only get bootlegs. It isn't really graphic or gory but i guess that the premis is too much for the Us. A whole class of 9th grade Japanese students are sent to an island and forced to fight and kill one another over a 3 day period. They are given a wide variety of weapons. If they don't fight and more than 1 kid is left alive after the 3 days is up then they will all be murdered as they have devices on their necks which explode their heads. Pretty wild.

The Barbarian Invasions was an excellent French film. But I'm a big fan of the old school martial arts movies like Police Story or The Chinese Connection.

"Ushpizin"
Israeli film, with Shuli and Michal Rand and Shaul Mizrachi.
It's about a religious Jew and his wife trying to make the best out of their situation during the Jewish holiday Succot while his friend from their old criminal days shows up.
Even if you aren't Jewish, or religious in any way, I think it's enlightening.
Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon
Chinese film with Chow Yun-Fat, Michelle Yeoh and Ziyi Zhang.
A martial arts artist tracks down the killer of his teacher with his woman friend, also a known martial arts artist. The governor's daughter admires the adventures and freedom these two have. Meanwhile, there is a masked person out to steal a precious sword.
*It ttakes some time to get used to Chinese films.

Malena was a very nice coming of age drama set in World War 2 Italy about a boy who lusts over his towns young widow. It stars Monica Bellucci.
