Hello-
My daughter received her first dose of the flu shot without any problems. We got her booster on Thurs and she has been running fevers and vomiting (yesterday morning and this morning). The fevers have finally started to break after doses of the Tylenol and Ibuprofen every 3 hour regimen. Her fevers are still running around 100, however she is teething.

Have your children had any similar symptoms??
Is this common after a booster of a flu shot?

Any advice is greatly appreciated!

The flu vaccine often uses a live culture, usually its inactive and most immune systems dont react to it as though it were a full blown case of the flu virus.

However, one of the side effects of the flu shot, or any viral vaccine using an inactive or live culture, is a lesser or mild case of that virus. Its uncommon, but totally acceptable.

Her teething also plays a huge roll in this. She can vomit and run a fever with teething alone.

Either way, things should be better within 5 days, since viruses such as the flu only have a 10 day life span, but things start to improve half way through.

If her fever stays up over 101 even with tylenol and ibuprophin then you need to take her to the doctor and make sure its nothing more complicated like advanced strep throat, or a bacterial infection of some kind.

Obviously you'd take her to the ER or atleast call your doctor if you're in anyway concerned for her safety.

The flu shots in SC are INACTIVE so should not cause a problem....I was not aware they were still giving live vaccines as the previous writer mentioned.....or that they were a series of shots.

Are you talking about the RSV/synagis vaccine? That is a monthly vaccine for the RSV. The teething will cause fever...at this point I would just treat the symptoms like you are doing.

These symptoms can be caused by the flu vaccine, however if she did fine with her first dose it could be that she got another virus on top of everything else. All you can do is let the symptoms run their course. Once she stops vomiting then you can giver her small sips of gatorade or pedialyte but other than that the bug just has to leave her system
