I'm not sure if the closeness is the reason. I've moved my computer to the router room, and now the two are about 50 cm away from each other. is there a known issue with this? once every 4 hours or so (not regularly though) the connection is dropped. it didn't happen when they were in separate rooms.

My guess would be that you are "too close" to the transmitting antenna. With all radio signals, there is a 'dead zone' immediately next to/under the antenna... The signal radiates outward, but there is often a dead space before the signal can actually be picked up. The same thing happens if you are standing right under or very close to a cell tower and your cell doesn't work, or your radio goes out when you pass too close to an antenna. I used to work in radio and TV and one of the issues when deciding on antenna placement is who DOESN'T get the 'immediate' signal.

Try moving the antenna itself. If you have it straight up and down, tilt it away from your PC. If you have it straight across, try tilting it up to a 45-degree angle...

It is obvious that the LAN connection from your Router/Access Point to the Computer is Wireless.

Wireless Signals emitted from the Access Point have a definite "footprint" and if the WiFi Receiver (Card/USB Stick) of your Computer falls outside of this Footprint, then the signal will not be properly received.

This will happen if the Access Point and the Computer are too close to each other. It can happen at random - so your once in four hours has no specific explanation.

My suggestion is to have a WIRED connection if the Computer is kept close to the Access point, especially in the case of a Desktop, which anyway you are not going to shift around..

You are probably getting radio interference. Look for a cordless phone or other wireless device. Maybe your cell phone.

Also, look at the construction of your house. Wireless signals have trouble with concrete walls and brick. So if there is a central chimney, that can block the signal. The signals want to travel in a straight line.

Good luck and Happy Computing!

Yes, it is possible to be too close. The receivers can become saturated at very close distances.
