Carpet can be made of many different things, such as wool, silk, sisal, jute, cotton, corn, soy and plastic (oil based). However, few of these natural products are used today for wall to wall situations. Most carpet is produced from oil based plastic. The plastic used will vary depending on the manufacture and will effect the pricing according to the cost of producing the plastic. So for the sake of breaking down the different types of plastic, I will list some of them: Nylon, Polyester (This can be made from recycled pop bottles, but not always. Polyester can vary in grade from the best to the cheapest grade, thus try to check how it is made), Olefin (polypropylene), And PDO / PLA is a new Process also allows CORN sugars (and soy in the future) to be converted to plastic and thus can be made into carpet. << http://www.corncarpet.com >> The best wearing carpet is wool, but it is the worst for staining. The CornCarpet is the next best for wear and very stain resistant. Branded Nylon and Polyester (made from recycled materials) are close for wear but polyester is better for stains. Olefin is the worst for wear but the best for stains. I recommend looking at each carpet with a professional to determine what is going to be best for your home. Each carpet is made with specific traits, so if you select the correct carpet for your living situation carpet will last you a long time looking great.

Yes, there is wool in certain carpets - wool berber, for instance. However, most carpets are made from recycled plastic soda bottles, believe it or not! Seriously. Generally, the carpets that most of us 'common folks' buy, is made of plastice (oil), but the very fine, and expensive, carpets are consisted of fine materials like wool and cotton.
Hope this helped with your question.
Have a good one!
