You should look for its compatibilty with various operating systems, no doubt. The primary issue however with most such cards is their driver's support for various wireless security technologies being used worldwide. From my experience, only Linksys and Broadcom keep their software well updated to suit and adapt to all kinds of wireless networks.

The only reason I would prefer the card version instead of the usb stick would be that it would fit nicely inside the laptop with only a little bit protruding out; whereas the usb version would remain completely stuck out of the laptop and annoy me.

I look for full compatibility with MAC OS, so then, I know it adheres to the STANDARDS of compatibility, and will run in almost any wifi network!

I run http://pclinuxos.com and Linksys products seem to be best.

I repair and service Macs, and PCs, and Linksys works in all OSes, on all systems.

Belkin / Usrobotic / Linksys PCMCIA wifi 54g is the best for laptops. It will also have backward compatibility with 11a,11b,22 and 54g too.
