As a boss, I am fortunately in a company that specifically requires that we are not a*holes. However, there are days that I would like to be. Take it from my side. Sometimes associates can do some pretty dumb things. Sometimes on purpose, sometimes not. And that can make a manager react. Sometimes I dont want to be friendly and I have to be.
And yes, there are bosses that are naturally a*holes, 24/7. If you have one of those, that is unfortunate.
As for me, there can be a lot of stress being in charge of everything and being responsible for so much, can make you stressed out, and seem like an a*hole although that is not what you are intending. In other words, I think there are 2 types of bosses. The natural a*holes who are that way no matter what and the ones who get stressed and become temporary a*holes.
A boss who avoids you to not have to say hello - if they used to do it before and don't anymore, either its something you did or they are way stressed out about something and maybe you can help. If they never did say hello ever - you have a natural a*hole.

I had a boss once and he was the worst! No one liked him. I was assigned to work with him, and since I was the new hire I had no idea. And he didn't know what he was doing at that! He just liked the title "supervisor". Finally he retired and life was good.
Here's my question: if you're not a "people person" (ie, you don't have any friends in real life lol) why should you be put in a position of manager? Aren't there more skills to being a manager than just being technically proficient? How about getting along with others? That should be at the top of the list.

Some are and some aren't. The thing is that all bosses have the responsibility and pressures to make the business work. they typically have a million and one things going on in their brains at the same time. Not making excuses for anyone, but a new person to the workforce might perceive the boss who is "aloof" as an a**hole when he is just trying to sort out details to make things work

You ask a very good question.
I've been a boss, but always used to treat my staff with respect.
I had to work my way up the ladder, as they say, to get into a managerial position, and as such had many years experience within the field of my work.
Many bosses these days only know the job on paper, and have had no real experience.
Any boss should, and be willing to, undertake any task that he or she expects his or her staff to carry out.
I always acknowledged my staff, with hello, or how are you, any problems, etc. even if I saw them out of hours.
Many bosses now seem to think they are "GOD" when we all know they are not.
Any bosses out there reading this answer, take note.

Then the boss cmplains about all the A-s-s wholes that work for him. Seems like every one is an a-s-s whole except me.
Just don't let it get to you and if your job is not what you think it should be then look for another job. Actually all of us should always be on the look for something else to do because one can never be sure what he does today will be needed tomorrow,.

if they avoid saying hello then when you have to deal with them keep it professional polite and very cold. i had a sort of boss it was like talking to a block of ice when i had to deal with him. but on his own he changed and became more friendly. there is nothing wrong with bosses who wont say hello to you, watch out for the ones who do! the ones who pretend to be your bestest buddy they'll shaft you in the blink of an eye.

Hello I am a manager but i am always nice to my staff. It is my belief that just because you are in posistion of authority does not mean you have to act like you are better than everyone else. People like that probably have an inferiority complex and treat you like crap to prove to themselves they are worthy of their job title-coz that's what they think being a manager means. Your boss needs to get a life x

All bosses have to meet a certain criteria for their job...I believe they become who they are by letting their own job and personnel get to them...They need to look at both sides of the coin, and do what's proper, and not make enemies of their personnel...People are people...With said power they will become who they become...And, that, my dear, is a big boss...
