Firefly is so right about how people are manipulated to vote on phony moral issues.
Of course, the Republicans will deny that Americans are dying for nothing. Don't they still prevent pictures of the caskets being unloaded from Iraq? Out of sight, out of mind, and they know that people get numb to the numbers.
I'm sure that Karen Hughes and her underlings are busy are focus group testing new slogans for the new "surge", the better to disguise the fact that it is all for nothing.

I have always found it astounding that the people who seem to be hurt the MOST by current administration policies are the ones voting to keep the current administration in office. Except for the 1% richest people in the US, I can't think of a policy that has helped the poorer half of AMericans, from which more than hald of the troops are drawn.
I chalk it up to something I'm not sure of the term for, but I might call it "distraction". Give people something to fear and hate that isn't really important, like welfare moms (a TINY amount of money is really wasted on abusers), whether US schools should only teach in English, Atheletes on Steroids, and yes, whether gays should be allowed to marry. Let them think the world is going to end if these moral abuses are not stopped. Then they won't be thinking about the real issues.
