No, as people react differently to coke and you don't want the actor dying on camera.

One solution is to use powered sugar, and have the actors blow (ie exhale), rather than
inhale. From the audience, the effect is the same. The powder disperses so fast that the
audience doesn't even realize the difference.

If you take this approach, get a sodium chloride nasal inhaler (NOT a decongestant), and have the actor take a couple of hits of that after each set of takes. It should help clean the sinuses, and prevent the growth of bacteria.

Others use baking powder, as it clumps up better and doesn't fly away. While on a mirror and 'chopped' with a credit card, it looks and sounds authentic, not gritty like sugar

Movies also use powdered milk, soy baby formula, or Ovaltine for fake cocaine (like the
Basketball Diaries). It won't hurt your system in any way, and if you actually do snort it, it
won't hurt your nose too much (if at all).

Actors and Directors and Producers are NOT above the law! And last time I checked, 'cocaine' was a highly illegal substance! If they were to use the real 'sweet stuff' and DEA came it, then the whole movie production would be shut down and all money put forward would be lost. That's millions I'm talking about. So, NO they don't break the law and risk EVERYTHING they're working so hard to achieve. They don't need to do real coke because they are trained and talented actors who can 'act' like they're on coke even when they're not. Just like they act like they've been shot when WE know they really did not. At least everyone but you would think that. You probally think they use real bullets and have real intercourse during the sex scenes, huh? LOL! It's ACTING!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Most of the time I’m sure you are correct on this score. However, do you realize how much cocaine must float around some movie sets? Yes, they’re professionals. That doesn’t mean they’re superhuman. Yet the demands from studios and audiences remain so. I’ve never been on a movie set, but the stories are legendary. I’m sure it doesn’t happen much these days, let alone overtly. Casually. But to categorically deny audiences have never seen real cocaine be snorted on screen, then I have one question. What are you smoking?

Sorry that was a cheap one.

Don't you imagine we could tell the difference? Man, those guys have to continue to function! The director says "cut," and they have work to do setting up the next scene. Getting a sense of where they are and what the character is doing, and what's going to be happening next.

Those special "the making of" clips on DVDs are a real education if you check out the right ones. I believe I have seen the one on Blow. The level of self control involved in portraying someone who is high under a particular set of circumstances is too great to risk on using real drug.

A really good actor is a master of self control. That's how he is able to portray exactly what the story requires in order to get us to follow the story and believe in the character.

Johnny Depp is a master among masters at this. And believe it, women respond to men who are masters of self-control.

And I'm sure the FDA approves whatever they do use as safe.

I don't really know, but I was watching this movie called Pizza and the kids were playing this joke on the main character. Making her think that they were sniffing cocaine but in reality was sugar made to look like cocaine. And then they told her, but they actually showed them sniffing it up their nose. So my best bet would be some kind of sugar formula. I mean the only way you would know the difference is if you have done it before or seen it up close.

No they dont sniff at all
special effects
if they do then its either
1.Real Cocaine
or
2.Sugar
the two choices depends on how much they are being watched.
if police and reporters are everywhere, then the actors will use sugar.
but if its okay they'll slip in the real stuff

Above are good ideas. I figured powdered sugar, that what it looked like in Scarface with Big Al. They really not snort anything, it acting. But, off the record, we never know when one may just do a little "Pick me up"! ;-D

Typically it's powdered milk, powdered sugar, baby formula, or other normally ingestible food items. Hope that helps!
