To tell you the truth, I had an Athlon XP 2500+ Barton core for quite some time, The only reason I upgraded was because I'm a junkie and I love new technology.
I wouldn't concern yourself with just buying a new motherboard, you honestly could do better by getting a new motherboard, processor, ram, and video card.
These days buying a Socket 462 motherboard isn't all that easy, there are fewer and fewer choices where the socket is outdated. I had an Albatron KX18D PROII and it was awesome. See source specs below in source section.
If your not concerned with being on the bleeding edge, you could still buy an AMD Athlon64 processor on the Socket 939 config and have PCI-e DDR400 support.
I currently have a Gigabyte GA-K8NF-9 motherboard with an AMD Athlon64 3000 Venice core, 1GB Corsair XMS (Dual channel), 350w Antec PS, and a XFX GeForce 7600GT XXX 256MB Video card, and it plays all the current video games with ease.
If you want to be on the bleeding edge, for just a little more money, you can go with the newer Socket AM2, which is the new AMD socket with DDR2 support. That will give you better bandwidth, the newer chipsets and greater upgradability. (unfortuntely the Socket 939 is soon to die.)
Good luck!

Actually, it is pretty cheap to upgrade the entire motherboard and CPU combo, to a 2600 Sempron, for a small price over the cost of a 'new' Socket A board.
You see, to get faster, and use the fast memory busses, you need to also buy DDR RAM, which most of the older boards couldn't use!
Also, your cpu fan is used, and should be replaced, for more money!
400 Mhz memory would be DDR! So, buy the newer technology!
I like http://pricewatch.com for the comparison pricing. Always check out the reseller ratings at other websites that are impartial!
( http://bizrate.com , or google for them )
For genuine speed up, upto 50X faster than Microsoft XP, I run what Microsoft runs on all their 45,000 computers, GNU/Linux!
Yes, Microsoft.com, Hotmail.com, MSN.com and all Redmond routers, firewalls (Aruba corp.) run on Linux!
http://pclinuxos.com includes 5500 FREE games, programs, applications, suites, browsers, free forums, support online 24/7/365!
Many of my computers, and those of my many hundreds of other Linux users run what you have with full success! We don't update just to keep up with someone else! In fact, most of us run some old 300 Mhz boxes! that is the fact, when you have an OS that processes about 50X faster!

sure, why no longer. you could o.k. try this. yet on an identical time as doing so be carefull as slightly disturbance could finally end up in bending motherboard socket pins. Do verify some Youtube video clips approximately a thank you to get rid of processors and set up on yet another board.

your ram is only going to go as fast as your bus speed anyway so if you put 400 MHz in it will only go 266 MHz anyway

You will not find a mothreboard with PCI-Express with that CPU. It is quite old. PCI-E is a new technology only around for about a year and a half. I would suggest buying a new PC.
