Go to Walmart and get one very large styrofoam ball, two large styrofoam balls, and two medium sized styrofoam balls, and three small sized balls. Paint them the colors of all the planets. The largest ball should be the sun, the two large balls should be Jupiter and Saturn, the two medium sized balls should be Neptune and Uranus, and the three smallest balls should be the Earth and Venus. Mercury should be of the smallest ball there is. If you want to include Pluto, get two of the very small balls.

Go to a craft store and get their different sized styrofoam balls (for the different sizes of planets & sun). You can paint them the appropriate colors and hang them with the clear plastic string type stuff (normally used for making bead-necklaces) from the inside of a cardboard box (one side removed, and the inside painted black - speckled with far off stars, of course!) ;)
Good luck on your project, I hope you enjoy creating it! :)

Using black bristle board as the base, I would add Styrofoam balls in various sizes (you can purchase them from a craft shop) or Xmas ornaments (if you have enough sizes/variations).
Good luck and Merry, Merry.
