She should drink at least 2 liters of water every day. Eliminate caffeine drinks like coffee, tea, and caffeinated sodas. Caffeine can cause constipation in some people.

Increase the fiber content of her food... more raw fruits and vegetables, less junk food, highly processed foods. Sometimes dried prunes gently stewed in water help constipation, and taste especially good if you add a bit of orange as they're cooking.

Take a dietary fiber supplement in a capsule, or something like Metamucil which can be dissolved in water. However, Metamucil has an orange flavor and has sugar added. It's best to add Metamucil to orange juice. Sam's Club (Walmart) has a maltodextrin fiber powder called Optifiber which has no sugar and which you can add to almost anything you eat or drink to add fiber to the diet. It dissolves completely and won't change the color or texture of the food.

Don't take laxatives because they're too harsh on your system, no matter how "gentle" they promote to be. You can get your system used to being stimulated by laxatives, too, and that's a bad thing. Best to increase the fiber and water naturally.

I had chronic constipation while pregnant and was given lactulose by the doctor. However, after 2 days I didn't find it worked any, plus I didn't like taking medication. I bought a juicer and flushed my system out by drinking only fruit and veg juice and eating salad. It took 2 days, then after one very difficult visit to the loo, all was cleared! Hooray!

Go with the psyllium-based bulking agents...like Metamucil or its generic equivalent. It's not truly a laxative, but just holds water in the stool so its easier to pass. She should just get in the habit of taking it every day throughout her pregnancy. Prunes and prune juice will help too. Beyond that, she needs to check with her Obstetrician first.

Oatmeal every day works wonders (and is good for you and filling for you and baby!).
Prunes work well too.
Be careful when taking bulk forming agents as you can choke on them if you do not drink a lot of water.
Also, avoid OTC laxatives.
