They can contact previous employers for a reference; normally, they will contact your previous two employers. They can also ask to see your exam certificates, but are unlikely to do so if you are over 30, unless you are applying for a teaching post.

I wouldn't advise lying, but you can be creative!

Think you will find that employers, cannot check information on your CV, which is why employers ask for references. We have a thing called the Data Protection Act, information cannot be given out unless permission has been given by the individual, which is why you would provide references.
As previous people have stated, it would not be wise to lie on your CV, embilish perhaps but not out and out lie, this will come back on you.
Even when you apply for a job working with children/old people the employer "Has" to ask you if it's ok to do a Police background check" obviously with this one you say no, you don't get the job, same thing with references you dont provide them they can withdraw the offer of employment or dismiss

Yes. Employers hire background check firms that do as little or much fact checking as you would like.

Nothing will stop someone from getting hired faster than lying or embellishing on your resume, especially if you are applying for a position where you will be trusted with personal information, money, etc.

I've put the links of a couple of companies that do this below so you can see exactly how much information an employer can find out about you if they wanted to...

There are Agencies that do this for companies. They are like private detectives in a way. The company contact them and give your details. They have all the contacts and search facilities that any investigative agency would have and they set to and check out all the information you have submitted in your CV. This is big business now and most large companies will use this type of screening. It was introduced because of the amount of false information that some job candidates were giving.

My friend applied for a job in one of the top banks in the UK- the company did a reference check on every single thing- they even contacted the primary school that she went to (which was at the total complete opposite side of the world) to find out if she really did study there, and her grades

Due diligence has no laid down procedure. Every employer could adopt a strategy of digging the past of their wolud be employees.

Your education is held on a database, and they contact previous employers.
Do not lie, or you either not get the job, or you will lose the job if you have lied on your C.V.

they can find out when is the last time you voted if they wanted to. dont lie on your cv, but pad the truth out a bit. after all your selling yourself to them. a well filled out job application form speaks volumes. sell yourself dont try and sell bullshit, they'll smell it a mile away.
