It really depends where you go. Do you have a 30 gallon now? 30 gallon water heaters are more expensive than 40 gallons because they are not very common. Are you in a mobile home? You may have to stick with a 30 gallon if you don't have the room for a 40 gallon. Also, no matter how many gallons, DO NOT install a regular water heater in a mobile home. The water heater has to be rated for mobil homes. Also, if you do have a MH, plan on replacing the water lines to the heater and other code requirements if it is old. As a plumber, I can tell you MH heaters can be a lot of work, for this reason, we usually charge around $1100 parts and labour. If you can, avoid Lowes and Home Depot, although it may save you a few bucks, if your water heater leaks or acts up overnight after the stores closes, you're out of luck. If you have a plumbing company do it, they will always respond 24/7. Good Luck!!!

To answer the question asked, about $450.00, if everything is up to code. I am in Texas, and the city requires a permit, which could cost up to $100.00. Then if there are code violations, each of those must be addressed, and corrected. If your flue pipe(gas model) is single wall, it MUST be changed to double wall. The gas valve must be an A.G.A (American Gas Association) approved valve, as well as the gas line must be approved by the A.G.A. Most municipalities require a drip leg( dirt leg) on the gas line after after the gas valve. The discharge line from the T&P valve (temperature and pressure relief) must be correctly attached, full bore pipe, proper pipe for your area, draining downward, extending to the exterior of the house. Your shut off valve needs to be in working order. (located on cold water line, located above heater to the left) Water connections should have a union connection for ease of servicing heater. The most important code requirement, mandates that if the heater is located in a garage, or a room directly accessible to the garage, the heater MUST be elevated on an approved stand. This elevates the heater (gas or electric) above the point where combustible vapors could build up and a spark could ignite them. If your water heater has a red tag affixed to it by your local gas utility, THE PROBLEM STATED ON THE RED TAG MUST BE FIXED. So you see there is absolutely no way to give you an exact cost for your situation. Call 3 plumbers, and tell them up front you are shopping for bids. Most companies will give free quotes. Good luck to you, and Merry Christmas

Get a tubing cutter, couplers, a drain hose, solder and do it yourself. It is really very easy. You people pay Way to much for someone else to do things that if you give them a try, you will see it isn't that difficult. Anyways, if you find that you can't do it after you begin, it will not cost any more at this point to call for help.

It really depends on who is doing the work. If you go somewhere and buy one yourself. ( If it is legal to do it there ) it can cost about $200.00. If you have a plumber do it about $500.00
