The Romans managed to conquer England but they found the Scots to be an unpredictable lot; they kept attacking then fleeing to the hills. The Scots kept raiding the Roman settlements then Hadrian decided he had had enough and built the wall to keep the Scots out.

The roman soldiers had conquered England, but not Scotland. They built the wall to help keep the Scots out of England.

It was certainly nothing to do with Scotland and England, as both these countries were the better part of 1000 years away from being formed.

It was a tacit admission by the Romans that they could not conquer and hold the territory to the north.

Depending on which side you were on at the time, to keep the other lot away from you or you away from the other lot. Kind of like the Berlin Wall. And of course, work for idle Roman hands to do.

To stop invaders from Scotland getting England, or the other way round. I think it was to stop Scottish invaders though.

Or, whoever built it, knew it would soon become a tourist attraction, so he was only trying to help the economy, as you probably have to pay to see it.

I prefer the latter!

To keep the Scots out of England....and to block the sound of those awful animals they seem to squeeze that make that horrible wailing noise.
