But I'm declining the invite. I forgot to let her know until today, Christmas Eve. So I'm thinking of baking her brownies as a thank you. Is that a nice thing to do? Or not needed? Most families will have more food today than needed? So are brownies overkill?

I think it's a great gesture, especially since you're telling her almost at the last minute that you won't make it. It'll be a way of letting her know that you appreciate the invitation even if you can't accept it.

You should go to dinner. A turn down this late would be considered an insult. Brownies are optional.

brownies are nice or go to the grocery store and get some pretty holiday flowers. but your presence at the dinner is gift enough!
