Is it easy to get from Melbourne Airport to the city centre? Where is the best area to look for accommodation. I'm only there for 4 days and on a budget but don't want a hostel. Any help or hints appreciated.

Yes it's easy to get from Melbourne airport to the city centre by bus or taxi..

An excellent place to look for accommodation in Australia is

I have personally used it many times in the past. You can look up by city, number of stars, facilities you want in the room, etc. And then you will see at a glance the availability. Although, you can only look and book 2 weeks in advance. They give high discounted rates.

G'day,

As per the previous answerers mentioned, there are 2 ways to go to Melbourne city from the airport, either by Taxi (abt $35) or Skybus.

In regards to living on budget, there are 2 options as far as I can tell:
1. YWCA in the middle of city, very close to Queen Victoria Market and Melbourne Central. Just click the first link
2. YHA hostels in North Melbourne area, very close to city. I know you have already specified that you do not want a hostel, but some of the accommodation options that they have are almost hotel quality! Just contact them to get some information. You may want to try to get the place in they Queensberry Street hostel, since it is a better one.

Good luck and welcome to Melbourne. Hope you will enjoy it.

Melbourne is about 6 miles out from airport. I believe ther are cheap accomadation for backpackers but if you want something better, ask a taxi driver.

There is a Skybus shuttle service, which operates 24/7. Adult ticket one way is $15.00, Adult return is $24.00 (Australian currency).

For more information on this, check out http://www.skybus.com.au/
