Don't ask IF Santa is real ... ask why he does what he does ... that way we may understand why many have Santa's helpers getting gifts for kids instead. The Real Santa may be still true to his original principles.
so ... WHY does Santa ggive gifts?

Tradition.

Santa Clause/Saint Nick became popular around the early 1800's. Rich Nick gave gifts as he was generous like that. Following tradition, Santa gives gifts too.

His heart is full of love and the spirit of giving; a heart sometimes can be so full of love that it has to over flow to others; we all have that capacity; this time of year it shows a little more in people who follow in the spirit of Santa Claus; the spirit of Jesus to give even if it means the coat on your back; that is a heart full of love and sharing - the true gift

Because he has such miserably low self-esteem (due to an abusive father who never told young Santa he loved him), he feels he must bribe the children to get the affection he so desperately craves.
It is not widely known that Santa attempted suicide last easter after attacking the easter bunny with a 2kg sleigh-bell.
He is only out of the psych ward on parole for xmas.

Santa gives gifts because he is so board the other 359 days in the year when he just eats cookies. Christmas is about giving so he thinks he should do something nice. once he gets there he finds that he is to fat.

Merry Christmas

Santa Claus symbolizes the Christmas Spirit. The Christmas Spirit is one of giving and helping others, rather than focusing on oneself.

He originally gave gifts as Kris Kringle to the poor children whose families were being taxed to death. He was a type of Robin Hood without the stealing. I'm pretty sure it was the parens who added the "You have to be good to get stuff" sidebar.

'Santa Claus' is a twist on the real person's name, 'Saint Nicholas'. A saint is someone who believes in Jesus. If you say 'Saint Nicholas' quickly, you end up with 'Santa Claus'. He originally gave gifts to poor children in orphanages. Orphans are children with no parents.

He gives gifts to remember the gift God gave the entire world, Jesus Christ, His only Son.
