Obviously not BUT it is much easier to support the local teams. In the NFL I've always supported the Saints even though the Buffalo Bills would be my closest team. I've just found that if you support the local team people don't question you and you don't need to know much about them BUT if you support a remote team people will ask you why and it's a lot easier to know some facts about them.
Also, support any team the same regardless of how pathetic they can be at times.
