A Knight must swear allegiance to whomever was bestowing 'knighthood' upon him. This 'oath of fealty' varied and could include any number of things (see chivalry below) but frequently at a minimum included an oath to defend the land, the Church, and the 'chivalric code of honor'.

In the 8th - 10th century French Knights had to swear to uphold the 'Nine Knightly Virtues. This list was French; some lists were shorter some far longer, and the knight had to memorize it.

Justice; to set and maintain the Balance
Wisdom; Knowledge gained and maintained
Charity; Hospitality and largesse (generosity) without boasting
Loyalty; True to one self and all others, all debts paid
Truth; The 'One truth' and told completely
Humility; Speak no good of self and no ill of others
Strength; in mind body and spirit
Hope; the power of positive thought
Temperance; moderation and self-control

It depends on which Order, Leige, or Monarch the squire was intending to serve.

The Knights of Malta, for instance, swore thus:

I do solemnly swear by Almighty God and His Name, and in free and voluntary desire, to serve as a Knight of Malta of the most holy Order of Saint John of Jerusalem. I do swear by the Eternal Power of the Trinity, to be both a true and chivalric Knight, to obey my Commanders and to aid my bretheren. I also swear by all that is holy and dear unto me, to aid those less fortunate than I, to relieve the distress of the world and to fulfill my knightly obligations. This oath do I give of my own free and independent will, so help me God!

Amen

(from 1560 AD)

Another example. From 1441 in Sweden, the Knights swearing allegiance to King Christoph of Bavaria:

I will to my utmost power with life and worldly possessions shield the holy christian faith and gospel, and keep and defend the churches and their servants at their freedom and estate, stand aginst wrongs and strengthen peace and righteousness and protect fatherless and motherless children, virgins, widows and poor people, and be safe and true to my king and my country and rightly hold and exercise my knighthood. God to honour, after my best power, so help me God.
