It's the layers used in building the tyre's carcase. An 8 ply one would have twice as many as a 4 ply. Generally the more plies, the heavier duty.

I should think it is the amount of layers of rubber on the tyre and the longer lasting, better quality being the 8 ply.

4 PLY would be for cars ..6 LIGHT COMMERCIALS ..8PLY for larger and heavier vehicles ..
