Each of the indices consists of different companies. However, a company can be simultaneously listed in two or three different indices. All the stocks in DJ are listed in the SP500. Bigger companies, such as MSFT and JNJ are listed in multiple indices.
The general distinctions among each of the three main indices are the SP 500 tracks the biggest 400 companies in America along with 60 financial and 40 utility companies. The NASDAQ tracks the biggest technology stocks, and the DJ tracks the top 30 companies in the country.
As far as finding out a sector's performance, you might have to find an index that specifically tracks the sector that you are interested in and find out the performance of that index.
