For the past few years I have lived in a remote town with no chance of being able to learn to play an instrument. But now I am moving to the city where I have the chance to learn an instrument at my new High School. In your opinions, what is the best instrument to learn to play, and just play in general.

Guitar. They are reasonably priced. There is tons of free stuff on the web for learning. You can teach yourself. Plus if you choose the strum a few tunes late at night, cops will not be at your door (hopefully). Best of all you can learn to play a song the first time out.

When it comes to band instruments here is my advice to you:
If you are a person with a good ear for tones, you might be interested in any of the horn section. Trumpet and trombone require a good ear for music since you must play multiple notes on each position.
If you are better at reading notes, then you might be better suited for woodwin where each note has it's own key.
Most band directors require that anyone who wants to play percussion, already have a background in music; ie. piano or violin.
I think that it's more inportant for you to feel comfortable with what you are playing. If it's an instrument that you like, you will be more excited about learning and practicing. Many schools have rental programs so you can try a variety of instruments until you find one that works for you. GOOD LUCK!!!!!!!

One thing you may want to consider is the ease of carrying the instrument to and from school. The flute weighs a lot less than the trumpet or trombone for instance. But.....playing the guitar or bass guitar is considered sexy if you're going for that. lol I personally love the sound of the French Horn, but I've heard it's very difficult to learn.

I played the flute in school and loved it. To me it came really easy and I loved all the parts we got in the songs. But now I really wish I had learned to play the drums instead.

Wow, I think I've confused you even more. lol

Good luck!

For simplicity and portability how about bass guitar (and by no means am I saying that bass guitar is "easy"). For one that will allow you to branch off to other instruments, piano or organ is good but takes a little longer to learn and may not be as portable. I started on piano and organ at 8 years old, guitar at 10 and bass guitar at 16. With good teaching, practice and dedication you won't just play. You'll really enjoy it.

I would start with the guitar. My son plays the electric and I really enjoy listening to him play. The drums would be my next choice but I would check with your parents first on that one. Good luck with your move and picking up a musical instrument.

Think about what type of music you like the most and will you enjoy playing the insturment when you get out of high school? I suggest the guitar. I play the guitar and the mandolin because I have a wide range of music tastes. Don't spend a bunch of money on the first insturment you buy either because you may not like it and want to try something else.

Consider the pro's and cons of each instrument, then think about what kind of music do you actually like, and how appropriate it is for you.

For example, sax. I would hate to do sax because I have weak lungs, however I love jazz music. But ultimately, my weak lungs, coupled with heavy weight and bulkyness of a sax, have prevented my from learning it.

Another example, ac. guitar. I have fast fingers, and a good musical ear for chords, so that is why I have chosen to play the guitar. Plus, I quite like spanish-style gypsy music, which I would love to learn one day. And, a guitar is portable.

Third example: violin. Extremely beautiful to listen to, but quite demanding in terms of natural abilities. Plus side: it is portable so you can carry it around and play when you like. Minus side: expensive violin tuition.

Fourth examole: piano. Nice sounds, useful for distant sampling and DJ-ing prospects. But, heavy, expensive, etc. etc.

----
Analyse each instrument you are interested in using the above method, and I am sure you will come to an optimal solution. GL

Guitar. Can be carried anywhere, can play it for any occasion, easy to learn, and can compose great tabs on it.
Piano is classic. Second Choice.

Violin, Flute, Harp. Are great instrument, looks more feminine. But are alright, because they produce soothing sound.
