Pope John Paul II, born Karol Józef Wojtyła (May 18, 1920, Wadowice, Poland – April 2, 2005, Vatican City) reigned as Pope of the Roman Catholic Church from October 16, 1978 until his death more than 26 years later, making his the second-longest pontificate in modern times after Pius IX's 31-year reign. He was the first (and only) Polish Pope and the first non-Italian Pope since the Dutch Adrian VI in the 1520s. He is one of only four people to have been named to the Time 100 for both the 20th century and for a year in the 21st.
Nicolaus Copernicus (February 19, 1473 – May 24, 1543) was the astronomer who formulated the first modern heliocentric theory of the solar system. His epochal text, De revolutionibus orbium coelestium (On the Revolutions of the Celestial Spheres), is often conceived as the starting point of modern astronomy, as well as a central and defining epiphany in the history of all science.
Maria Skłodowska-Curie was a Polish-French physicist and chemist. She was a pioneer in the early field of radioactivity, later becoming the first two-time Nobel laureate and the only person to win Nobel Prizes in two different sciences (physics and chemistry). She also became the first woman appointed to teach at the Sorbonne.
Lech Wałęsa born September 29, 1943, Popowo, Poland) is a Polish politician, a former trade union and human rights activist, and also a former electrician. He co-founded Solidarity (Solidarność), the Soviet bloc's first independent trade union, won the Nobel Peace Prize in 1983, and served as President of Poland from 1990 to 1995 (succeeded by Aleksander Kwaśniewski).
Roman Raymond Polański (born August 18, 1933) is an Academy Award-winning Polish–French film director and actor. A celebrated Hollywood director of such films as Rosemary's Baby (1968) and Chinatown (1974), he is also known for his tumultuous personal life. In 1969 his wife Sharon Tate was murdered by the Manson Family. In 1978, after pleading guilty to having unlawful sexual intercourse with a minor, Polanski fled to Europe.
Czesław Miłosz was a Polish poet, prose writer, translator and essayist. In 1980, while living in Berkeley, California, he won the Nobel Prize in Literature. He spent the last days of his life in Kraków, Poland.
Jurek "Jerzy" Dudek is a Polish football player. He is currently playing as a goalkeeper for Liverpool F.C.. He has been capped 54 times for the Polish national team.
