A word for this is "obsequious" or "people pleasing"
If someone mentions a couple of 12 Step self-help programs for you then they should get "Best Answer".
You cannot, no way, now how, keep good company with all types of people in general being your true self.
There are times when you don't act your true self. To put on a facade or play a role read, "How To Win Friends and Influence People" by Dale Carnegie.
Remember that no-one will love you if you don't love yourself.

If you truly believe what you are doing is right, then what is the danger from being exposed to other people?
If you believe that 2 + 2 = 4, and other people you meet disagree, to what extent does your interaction with them force a change of your viewpoint? A belief in what is right does not make it so, and those who have unshakeable opinions are not necessarily any more 'moral' than those whom are open to suggestion.
A good rule of thumb is to define what your limits are when you are around others. If off-color jokes offend you, then state clearly and firmly you do not tolerate such behavior around you. And if others continue, then simply say "I tolerate all people's need for respect, and have no tolerance for those who do not respect me. Goodbye." To compromise oneself to be around others is to cheapen both oneself and the value of the group to which you want to belong, and no one benefits.

Have well thought out principles, and stick to them. You can't get on with everyone, and if you try you will fail.

that person should always remember "i can't please everyone"... if he or she thinks it's the right thing to do and beneficial, why not just do it?
