Or is the "real" object somewhere between the positions where each eye is telling my brain it is?

Drink more booze - when you can see 3 objects you know its the middle one!

Seriously though the real object is likely to be between the two images you see just like when you go cross eyed and an image diverges in to two semi-transparent pictures.

Now I think about it I think there's a better answer - in a way BOTH eyes are correct - you have to keep in mind your brain is playing some tricks when it takes the two images and makes them in to one with an appearence of depth. The object looks like its in different places because your eyes are looking at it from different places - a few inches apart.

None of the images are real. It is the same as when we close one eye and see something and then close another to see that same thing. You would feel that there are two images. Since whatever we see is pictured at the retina and then "inverted" by our brain, the images are not exactly "real".

If you ask me to compare with normal situation when we see things with both eyes, it should be somewhere in between the position of both eyes.

both objects are "real", the location of the object is in between the 2 images.

when you see double it is your brain failing to sort the information from your eyes to focus on the object.

Both images are real but your eyes are not ajusting to work together, so as your eyes are set apart each eye sees the image at a slightly different angle and it appears as two seperate images.

If I had to choose one, I'd say "between".

When you see double, it means your eyes aren't focusing (or focusing on the same thing). Your mind is seeing what each eye sees, but you only process "one" image so it looks "out of focus".

if you see two guys on the road after a drink and suspect one is real, study both - the imaginary image is the guy who is little above or below the ground level and a little more transparent. PLEASE NOTE - you cannot drive in this condition. You may need to be carried home.

i think it's in the middle cos each eye looks at it from each side. whenyou go coss eyed on pupose you can see where the object is as you go back to normal. does that make sense?!
