Most people do lose weight whilst they sleep due to Insensible Water Loss (so-called because we're not aware of the loss), ie., water that passes through the skin and is lost by evaporation, plus evaporative water loss from the respiratory tract during sleep. The minimal insensible loss in an adult is about 800 mls daily, but during the day we are continually replacing the lost fluids, whereas at night this doesn't happen of course. The amount lost will also depend on air conditions, ie., dry/humid, hot/cold, and on the stress levels of each individiual. This loss is why dieters always feel 'slimmer' in the morning and like to weigh then, rather than later. Also the use of a tape measure around the waistline, will often reveal a lower measurement first thing in the morning - and that's not due entirely to the fact that we haven't eaten!

No you actually grow in your sleep apparently for the following reason:

Not only do you shrink as you age, you also shrink during the course of a day. The water in your spine is compressed by gravity so you finish the day a bit smaller in stature than you started it. However, your body recovers overnight as you sleep, so you are standing tall again in the morning.

You actually return to your natural height when you lie down and relax whilst asleep. This is due to gravity acting mainly on your back (spine) during the day when you are upright. The mass of your head is approximately 5 kg (11 lb) due to gravity this compresses your spine at the next fixed point your hips.

Actually you shrink while you are awake as your back gets compressed through being upright all day ( that is if you bother to get out of bed!)

no you actually grow
as the discs in your back expand due to the fact that you are lying down and putting no weight on them which compresses them
