I've pulled gas tanks before - not from a Firebird, but it's not all that hard on a typical car. Just get the gas out of it (if the fuel pump is still working, you can hot-wire it) if possible, put a jack in the middle of the fuel tank, disconnect a few lines, and the straps holding the tank in usually just unbolt.

This is possible but not a good idea. Droping the tank is not that big a job. Some cars come with an access door built in for this purpose. That is where the idea came from. It would require a hole about 6" in dia. and getting the location correct would be a task in itself. However you would not compromise the structural integrity of the car by doing so but you would have to patch it up when done to prevent water, fumes, dirt, etc. from entering the car. This could be done with a larger piece of sheet metal and gasket material.

Whoever told you that is blowing smoke up your...well you know. You have to drop the gas tank down to replace the fuel pump. There is no other way. Also remember not to use a drop light when you disconnect the fuel lines or else your day could get a hell of alot worse.

Unless you are will to change the structural integrity of the body, I would suggest just draining the tank and dropping it.
