The last media report I saw on "Indian women in distress" was how Indian wives were abusing a new draconian domestic violence law. Here's a sample from the India Times:
"Sherpa says that 60 to 70 per cent of the torture complaints by wives against husbands turn out to be baseless. 'In most cases, women lodge complaints only to harass their husbands.'"
Interestingly enough, a lot of battered men have been seeking shelter at police stations from their abusive wives. But I'm sorry, you were talking about how Indian women have it so horrible.

I think things are slowly improving but overall the Indian press seems still very afraid to target hot issues like rape, sexual harassment, dowry and police violence against women. There is still a tendency to blame the victim and not the offender. I saw Indian newspapers publishing the name and street address of a rape victim! The offenders were referred to as the "boys". One of the exceptions is Indian Elle. The published some pretty radical piece about rape and sexual abuse in India.
I hope things will change and I hope that you will be able to contribute to this change with your work. All the best.

The role of the media is to report things as they are in a balanced way. Often they forget this and end up sensationalising a story to get more readership.

1. Women's issues need sensitive treatment by media.
2. They should reach out to more women, to empower them. They should run articles on women's liberation, legal obscurities, women empowerment.
3. They should encourage women to speak up and voice their opinions in media.
4. They should use their clout to sort out pending court cases and other issues of women.
5. They should stop portraying women as commodity. They need to be sensitive when printing photos and other soft-porn.
6. They should also sensitize male readers about women's issues.

The role of the media in every country is to tell you what you want to hear so that you remain in their vehicle for commercial advertising. The role of non-commercial media is worse. Their job is to make you stupid and serve their political goals. I kidd you not. No exageration.
