Thanks for all you suggestions. My daughter (whose bag it is) used the washing up liquid suggestion - scary at first as it left a green mark (clour of the liquid). We then patted it with kitchen towel and then tried to rinse it off with water when we could see the black oil had cleared.
Hopefull it will be fine when dried!
The item concerned was one of her handbags that she designs and makes - if interested go to iloveknitting.net to see her stuff. The person who ordered the bag has just fetched it - sounds pleased!
Happy Christmas to you all.
Will pik best anwer later (not allowed yet(

THE MOST IMPORTANT THING IS NOT TO PUT WATER ON IT AS THE WATER WILL SEAL IN THE OIL STAIN. USE WASHING UP LIQUID ON THE DRY STAIN, THIS WILL LIFT THE OIL OUT OF THE FABRIC. FOR HEAVIER STAINS LEAVE WASHING UP LIQUID ON FOR LONGER.

STEP 1: Apply an absorbent such as talcum powder or cornstarch to the affected area, then brush away. If the stain is heavy or old, proceed to Step 2; if fresh, skip to Step 3. STEP 2: Place stain facedown on paper towels. Blot back of stain with a dry-cleaning solvent. Replace paper towels as they soak up the stain. STEP 3: Spray with laundry pretreatment. STEP 4: Wash in the hottest water that's safe for the garment. STEP 5: Air dry.

initiate with a solvent designed to soften and get rid of oil mutually with swarfega. The orange version smells superb. you could in specific circumstances purchase small tubes from Halfords. prepare this to the oil and flow away it to artwork. Then wash as prevalent in a gadget. in case you utilize detergent first it should not be triumphant because of the fact the oil will face as much as water based suggestions properly whilst sparkling.

Try putting neat fairy liquid (other washing up liquids are available!!) on the stain before you put it into washing machine. It cuts through the greasy mark!
