As far as I know, there is no child's edition of Harry Potter books. These books are classified in book stores as books for teen-agers, but every-one love Harry Potter, and they are read by people of all ages, even adults ; so popular that films are made of these books.

Just as a side note, there is no difference in the US version - there is only one cover for adults and children. However, they did change some of the British wording - I guess they thought we wouldn't be able to figure out that "the baker's opposite" means "[the bakery] across the road."
Also, the US version has illustrations at the beginning of the chapters, and the British version doesn't have any - and I have the "children's" version.

The cover is the only difference. The content is exactly the same.

Interestingly, they've just started putting "adult" covers on Terry Pratchett's books as well.

I'm guessing kids version is a paperback or something with some pictures in. Adult version paper/hardback editions with less pictures and lengthier descriptions/more educated wording.
