in which a group of people flew a plane, which I think was called the Phoenix, and whenever they had to go and fight the baddies, they would shout, "G Force!", at which point their plane would turn into a fiery phoenix?

"Battle of the Planets" was the name of the American version. The original anime is called "Gatchaman".
They have both the English and anime versions out on dvd. Rhino did the first English ones (under the name "Battle of the Planets" with the anime as bonus episodes, but I don't think they put out all of the series before they stopped.
ADV Films picked up the license (as Gatchaman) and are releasing DVD sets for them. They are up to volume 18 now, and you can get the volumes separately, or get their box sets (2 volumes per box).

Original series as it aried on american television in the late 70's and early 80's was called Battle of the Planets.
It was revived in the 1990's or 2000 or so as G-force, but with new names for the characters and some new dialogue...not as good as the original...but then what is...

If its the anime type series from about 1972 onwards then ...In the UK they were known as G-Force the rest of the world knew them as Science Ninja Team Gatchaman "Battle of the Planets" was a hit world wide . Originally a Tatsunoko production its still in production today .. by Sandy Franks Production Team ....... this will give you nostalga !! .................... Mark, Jason, Princess, Keyop, and Tiny. Battle of the Planets! I was always rooting for the baddies to win though, mm Spectra I think? With their machines that were robo-monsters.
The chief baddies name eludes me, Zoltar? or something like that. I always had the suspicion that Zoltar? was a woman.
