Practice deliberately... Start with a goal, a specific riff or pattern you want to play faster, and SLOWLY work it up to speed. Start at a speed you can do easily, and then VERY slightly increase the tempo at which you try to play it. (A metronome will really help you with this; You can set it to a very slow tempo, play the part several times, then increase it ONLY A NOTCH OR TWO, and play the part many times at that tempo before increasing the metronome speed another ONE OR TWO NOTCHES. Be VERY gradual in the increases.) Concentrate, but remember to RELAX. (Don't be so tight that your hand hurts, or you bite your lip or anything like that.) STAY RELAXED and SLOWLY build up your speed. The metronome will help you guage your progress, and you should see some pretty quickly if you apply yourself.

But also... Don't try to be really fast just for the hell of it. It's more important that you play good notes, notes that make the songs sound better. That's MUCH more important than being fast. Have fun!

As one other person responded, get a metronome and use it.

But there are technique exercises that will help you develop better coordination. The point is, you have to do them over and over and over, building your finger muscles and teaching your body how to respond with more ease and speed.

You can do these just in the first position (first 4 frets) or move them anywhere up and down the neck.

Using an alternating picking (up/down/up/down) play the following finger patterns, gradually GRADUALLY increasing in speed. Do NOT play them any faster than you can play them well. You can push yourself a bit each time, but concentrate on getting good notes.

Patterns to play:

1-2-3-4, 1-2-3-4
4-3-2-1, 4-3-2-1
1-4-3-4, 1-4-3-4
1-3-2-3, 1-3-2-3
1-3-2-4, 1-3-2-4
4-2-3-1, 4-2-3-1

Practice is the only way. I've been playing for over 35 years. You've only just begun. Be patient and give yourself time.
