Be generous, its a naf day to have to work. Depending on what they are doing (pub/restaurant?) I would suggest double pay, plus time off in lieu. Also ensure they have an extra break, and the atmosphere is a little more relaxed than usual - work or not, its still Christmas!

I'd pay at least double. It's one day -it won't break the bank and the poor sods are working on Christmas.

A question like this generally is not a matter of public opinion, but rather an issue of labour law. As an employer it's your duty to know the proper wages, generally in North America this is double time and a half on statutory holidays. Extra generosity is always appreciated by employees, and builds loyalty both to you and the company as well as improving morale.

Bosses that go above and beyond receive results which are above and beyond.

But you simply asking the question shows you care, I am sure your employees know that!

Double time with a bonus, I'm sure it must be an occupation that requires people to work, newspaper, police, hospital, etc etc....is there anyway to have shorter shifts so they can spend sometime with family?, and for some Christmas can be a sad holiday, they may prefer to work.

At least double pay if you are not nice enough to give them the day off! Oh and an xmas bonus would also go down well

Steven! they should pay you for the priviledge of serving you, you are such as generous sod!
:) As long as they get their usual half hour off for lunch on Boxing day, I think all is fair.
For but a little while longer this year....
A Merrily joyous, barking mad, wickedly happy Christmas to everyone who celebrates!

You only have to pay minimum wage by law. Same for any bank holiday, people often think that its illegal to make people work hols but it isnt, you could potentially sack anyone who refuses to work if you've rostered them in.
That's the legal side but why not just pay them double and give them a small bonus as well.

Minimum double their normal rate, plus a gift and give them one thing that most employees lack and thats appreciation, also bear in mind that none of them want to be there so why not show your own face, that way they won't call you behind your back. If you expect them to work Christmas day you should be willing to work yourself, its your buisness after all!
