I think you have answered your own question. You have heard (or read about it) and I have too. There were Irish regiments fighting on both sides.

Your not 100 accurate on your info. Yes there was a lot of prejudice against the Irish; many political cartoons of the time show them as more monkey than man. You have to remember the times that they were living in; there was a great flood of Irish escaping from the persecution and famine in their homelands. The “sophisticated” people of the time saw these poor peasants who came here with strange customs and language. Now this is not to say it was a fair representation of the people coming here to the states, but as is always the case with amass flood of immigrants fear and anger over take common sense and compassion.
Yes it is true when Irish Immigrants arrived during the Civil war most were put right to fighting, but this is true on both sides of the conflict. At the Battle of Fredericksburg, the Irish Brigade of the Union came face to face with the Irish Brigade of the Confederates. The men on either side of the conflict could not understand how the other could fight for that cause.
However one thing was gained from the Civil War, the dedication and passion the Irish had shown during the conflict had proven their worth in the eyes of a lot of people, the view on the Irish changed, they became a more accepted part of society.
You see the same patterns appearing from time to time, it happened with the Irish, the Italians, Chinese and Hispanic.
You shouldn’t try to judge the past for their ignorance you should be grateful that we have moved beyond that point and apply those lessons of yesterday to the events of today.

It wasn't just the Irish that were exploited. When America says we'll take your poor and hungry, they mean we'll take them and give them all the jobs that the richer people can't or won't do. It's the ugly little truth. And if they can't get you here, the capitalist system will go to small countries and build factories, make the locals rely on factory jobs, ruin their culture, then move out and leave the people destitude because they have found a place with cheaper labor. The same thing then and the same thing now. And another interesting thing is listening to Bush talk about Texas's education plan with no child left behind. I live on the Tex/Mex border and the powers that be here work hard to dummy up the education system so that there is a cheap work force here. And that is with the MILLIONS of illegals flooding over the border. . .but they are smarter than you are told. They don't want the bad jobs. . .they want yours and they will do it for less. . .why not, they don't pay taxes. . .Many at first are glad to be able to eat and get any type of roof over their head. They will do anything to get established, get their phoney papers, and move north and blend. Sound familiar? Be aware of the past. It repeats itself over and over. Be aware of the truth of what is going on around you.
And if you have some spare time, check out how WalMart operates. They went from "Come to our store and buy American" even tho we are putting all the Mom and Pop stores out of business and then dictating to large corporations how they will make their product and how much WalMart will pay for it. Then there was Kathie Lee crying on TV about her cheap, nasty clothes WalMart sells and how she didn't know they were made by children working long hours in horrible conditions, and now they are dictating to China and importing EVERYTHING. Of course, the USA does not get to send our products to China at the same level so our large companies go out of business. It goes on and on. . .

Yes it is well known but then they made it through all of that in America and attained fame and fortune through politics by being police officers, and bootleggers, (Joe Kennedy, Bugs Moran etc.), and they were gathering a foothold in politics since they had muscle, and many of them abused that power, the same way the some blacks do today and the hispanics, etc., not to offend any race, creed or color, but there has always been bad and good in everyone, and some take it too far and make it bad for the rest. If I remember correctly Ireland finally won their relative freedom from the tyranny of England just recently when President Clinton was in. so they have evolved past that time. I just wish everyone else would and we could get past it all and move on and start thinking of being friends and help each other save our earth, from all the polution and the destruction of wars.

We do here how badly Irish are treated in America. Eg. Gangs of New York. When I talk to people about immigration and crime I use the Irish as an example. But you forgot to add how abusive and racist the Irish were too. In san Francisco the sand lot gang took over the city and abused the Chinese.

lets face it, AMERICA is a nation of immigrants. some came voluntarily, some came by way of kidnapping but every group that has come, was treated badly, to begin with. its a vicious cycle but, a fact. I am German-American and, have been told all My life, how bad My ancestors were treated, when they first arrived.
