I'm having a very tough Christmas this year. My family is arguing and we don't even have the money to buy each other small gifts. I've been feeling really angry and anti-Christmas. What can I do help get back into the spirit?

The gifts are not the main issue here ... its the icing on top of my crappy cake. The problem is that we've all been arguing for 3 months and can't seem to get along ... not being able to give anything is just adding to my depression.

Last White Guy -- thanks for that answer, it made me laugh. However, I'm pregnant so getting drunk isn't exactly an option unless I want Christmas to suck even worse next year. *lol*

I've been in the same mood. I just decided to make the best of it and enjoy my kids and the dinner and the roof over are heads and the blessings that we do have. My kidsthey have been the greatest blessing in my life. I brought what I could and explained to them what I couldn't buy ahead of time so I wouldn't feel guilty or upset because I wanted more for them. They said they loved me and that was the greatest gift of all.

I reflect on the Blessings that I take for granted . I am in good health , all my family is in good health , I got to eat 3 square meals today , I have a place to call home , I have a job , I live in America , I wasn`t told today I had terminal cancer and only a few months to live , I didn`t get news that a close relative or friend was killed in an accident ??? After I dwell on these Blessings for a minute or so , I would see myself as pretty selfish with my thoughts ! There are always other people that are in a much more serious situation than you or I and they need your thoughts and Prayers more that us if you are as Blessed to be enjoying the same things I listed !! A sincere " I LOVE YOU " , and a hug for all your family members would be the greatest gift they will ever receive from you , and it`s free !!!

Sit with the family and tell stories. Make a few gifts for one another. Read from the BIBLE. I would begin by reading the Gospels (Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John) with your family. Take ruens reading at the table or around the living room and have snacks to eat with your reading. The greatest thing about doing this is everyone will be involved and you can get the family ready to begin a BIBLE STUDY with a non-denominational Church from near your home. GOD will see to it that everything works out. HAVE FAITH in HIM!!

The spirit isn't about gifts. If your family were to remember that, then it seems like you guys wouldn't be so blue. I hope that you guys get things settled out and have a Merry Christmas.

I would suggest to go out for dinner at a restaurant for Christmas. That way your Jerry Springer family will have to behave themselves in public.
If you want to give them something, buy them movie tickets and watch a movie on Christmas. Or if you are poor poor, by them all candy canes and attach a paper to it telling the history of the candy cane (search under "history of candy cane" on any search engine) and wrap them up.
I have a disfunctional family as well. My parents,my sisters, and my aunt are all hypocrites. It would be a novel to write about each of them. I am glad I am married and have my own family now.

I suggest doing some Christmas Carolling!
My mom does that every Christmas Eve. You can do that 2! It feels so joyful seeing people smile when you sing 4 them. Especially when there are kids. And the plus side, you can make extra money.

If you have time, go out and volunteer at a shelter or something to remind you have how good you have it. It may bring things into perspective for you.
Merry Christmas, I hope things turn around for you soon.

That sounds pretty rough. My girlfriend and I broke up just last week, and I'm going to be spending christmas alone this year. Sounds like we have similar situations.
