My friends use Dell and they always have problems with their laptos. I dont know about Gateway. Sony has problems with batteries. I haven`t heard any single problem about HP, so I recommend that one.

I strongly recommend a homebuilt PC.
If you don't want to go that route, then go to a local (not chain or bigbox) computer store or computer geek, and have them build one for you.

As far as brands go, I haven't found a desktop computer brand I like yet (have always built my own, and repaired/upgraded other peoples)... I would try a Dell desktop, but not a Dell laptop ... others .. well ... all are "maybe's" to me except compaq and emachines, which are the cheap lines of HP and Gateway, I would avoid these.

For a laptop, I would recommend Toshiba. they seem solidly built (got a used one for my daughter, it's been excellent). I have also had an HP laptop and currently have a Gateway. Love the Gateway, would not recommend the HP.

Home grown.

I BUILT my computer. I wouldn't touch any brand name pre-fab PC (except for maybe alienware). If you want to make sure your computer has the best components and not cheap, low performance parts you are far better off doing some reading and planning what you want in your new system and saving up some dough.
