Yes, I have seen both versions. I thought the 50s version was a funny B grade movie and I found the 80s version with Kurt Russell to be very entertaining. Top acting from Russell. it had outstanding special effects from Richard Carpenters make up team too. The crawling head was excellent.

My favorite horror movie, friend. Kurt Russell gives the performance of his career. Good story set in 40 below weather to give that deathly chill feeling. John Carpenter works his claustrophobic magic. Without any CGI, great make up and effects - even today.

I feel the same way... the original was cool, but the creature as envisioned in the remake was a lot better.
