We thought the problem was the pump, so we ordered a new one. Turns out, the plug on the end of the wire is still in the pump; it looks like the wire either broke or burned off right at the cap. Is this something we can fix ourselves? Heck, is it fixable at all??

I'll do my best to explain this. There are wires with two plugs at the end, one on the black wire and one on the red/white. These plug into holes in the pump, which is self contained with its own motor. There's a separate motor for the rest of the washer. We undid the red/white line when we tried to replace the pump. The black one is broken or burnt, though. It looks like the wire was cut right behind the plug, so the plug is still in the pump (but can be taken out easily) and the wire is just loose. I think there ought to be a way to put a new plug on the end of that wire. And the pump might be fine. My husband says it looks like the black line is shorter than the the red/white and he wonders if it just snapped? We thought it would be a simple clamp on plug, but it isn't. It looks like there was a hole in the plug for the wire to fit into...

Anything is fixable, its whether you have the knowledge and skill to repair it. If it is burned then something had to go wrong to make it burn. Either it was a loose connection or your circuit could be too small or large for that appliance.

Wow! Now that is really perplexing. "THE PLUG on the end of THE WIRE is still in the pump." " ...wire either...RIGHT AT THE CAP."

Does your washer have a single-assembly pump motor and pump? That is, does this pump come preassembled with its own electrical motor? (or are they 2 separable units?) If the problem is a broken/burned wire then depending on how accessible the break is, it might be a very simple repair.

What/where is THE CAP, where the wiring apparently is broken?? (and what is the cap?)

I'm a woman, and after unplugging the cords, I've opened the outer frame of the dryer and taken the little sensor's out, taken them into the parts center (Serve-all) and bought new ones. These little sensors go bad, and often only need to be replaced. Sure saved me the $200 for a service call. When the little sensors were only $25. Search the internet, and I am sure you will find diagrams to replace your items. You really have nothing to lose if you can identify the problem.

I certainly would try to attempt it myself.

Yes you can fix it. You can probably purchase a new plug or cap. If possible disassemble the cap and replace the wire. TURN OFF THE ELECTRIC FIRST.
