Well if you don't like her she isn't your best friend.

First of all,I'd like to ask:How is she the 'greatest' & 'best' friend & u dislike her?
Secondly,I'd like to tell something.U know what that is a nice coincidence;my best friend too always likes to be the leader.I really hate this thing in her.So that's what I've done.
I agreed with her that each one will tell the other what does she actually dislikes in the other. She told me what she hates in me & I told her what I hate in her including this "leader" thing. And it worked. Now,she's trying not to control the other or to make herself a leader all the time.If u & ur friend r really best friends then this thing will work & u'd both be better friends.

I don't like controlling people. Start being the leader by telling her, that you don't like it, that she is so controlling with you and others. Maybe she will back off.

before i used to have this kind of problem! usually i only tell my problems to my friends and not directly to the person involved!

then i got fed up and what i did was, i wrote her a letter! i told her everything that i felt inside! everything that has been eating me up ever since! and i also included at the bottom of the letter a time, date and location where we could meet to talk further the matter privately and hopefully resolved it!

and she told me that she wasn't aware of it or kinda not minding it because she thinks it's better for her to be like that! but i told her the truth and since then she changed to a person which is more likable!

hope this experience of mine helps! n_n

it is in the genes. they have discovered natural leaders have such a character. it would be best if you understand her and live with it, but if she is way too overpowering then remind her kindly that not everyone is born with the same genes and that some repel ;)
just like magnets.

Be honest with her, sit down and talk things out. It will make you feel better.
