Four inches is good. Any farther apart and you have the chance of the sub-floor buckling - even a little - and it will pop up the tiles. A lot of people don't realize this when they are putting down tile, so good thing you know to ask. Be sure to use a fair amount of glue/adhesive on the floor joists just before laying the plywood. If you are planning on using mortar board on top of the sub-floor, be sure to screw that off at 4 to 6" as well. Your plywood determines the tenacity of the sub and the mortar board is placed mostly for water leakage prevention.

I don't know what your talking about? the cement board? I put mine twelve inches on center all the way around.

if your talking about cement boards which you should be putting down they have pre made spots where your screws go.

6" is good 4" is better, you can not have too many screws
