Christopher Columbus. Didn't you go to school ?
It happened the 12 October 1492.
OK, I just saw some of the other answers. Right, the Native Americas entered first, then the Vikings, then even the Chinese are now claiming that they did it.
Fine, even Felix the Cat discovered America before Columbus. The point is, when Columbus discovered, found, arrived, whatever you want to say, America stayed discovered

The Asian population that traveled from Northern Asia, across the Bering Strait that once connected Alaska to Asia, were the first people to descend into North America. This took place thousands of years ago. However, most people credit Columbus with discovering America, this however, is not the case. He first landed on the island of Hispanola (Haiti), not North America. Not to mention Amerigo Vespucci discovered the land prior. There is also evidence that Vikings first landed here under the guidance of Leif Ericcson. But there are also accounts that vikings even before him landed on North America. So the first, if you approach this question literally, are the Asians from the Bering Strait.

23,000 thousand years ago, the native Americans were here, and no one discovered it. What the people did that take credit is come here land and find that there were people here already with housing and living comfortably without the invaders. But thus there we go all over again, conquest of someone elses life and world. Man just wont quit and now they are going to do it in the galaxy that we live in as well. So if they find civilization in outer space what will they say then for credit, "Oh we discovered Aliens", I hope they the Aliens kick their butts out.

The Vikings actually discovered North America. Columbus just realized that there was land on the other side of the Atlantic.

Winston Churchill.

Okay, no, only joking, it was people from Siberia who came originally from central Asia actually, who went up through Russia and later crossed into Alaska. Native American Indians have the same facial structures as those of many Asian communities-including the epicanthic fold; however this is also present in some members of South African tribes and therefore could be something dating back to when the world was in the state of Gondwanaland (ie: all continents joined together.)

From a European perspective it was the Dutch, followed much later by what you learn in school with Christopher Columbus.

Columbus deserves credit since there was no mass migration to the Americas before he landed. However, the NYTimes had an article on OCT10th,1982 of how 2 Roman ships were found in the bay of Rio De Janeiro-Brazil. Others like the Phoenicians & Vikings also probably did. But, it does not appear that they publicized it.

Native Americans were here first, either from their own little Garden of Eden over here or by crossing the Berring Strait. Amerigo Vespucchi is who the country is some what named after, since he got here, but usually either Leif Ericson, or more commonly Christopher Columbus are credited with the discovery.
