Depends on the actor / actress. Sometimes you can tell they're just puffing. What's really interesting to watch is how many scenes, particularly in commercials, never show a person actually eating the food. They'll bite into a sandwich, or they'll put food that's on a fork or spoon into their mouth but the commercial will cutaway to something and when you again see the actor or actress, you see them either just smiling or making a motion like they're chewing.

One notable exception, in a tv show: All in the Family. When they sit around the table eating, they're actually eating.

A lot of actors smoke. In fact, actors tend to like smoking roles because they can indulge -- though sometimes there are so many takes of a smoking scene that actors throw up! If they don't smoke, they can fake it by just holding a cigarette, or not inhaling, or they can smoke something without tobacco in it. It varies in the case of kids as well. Stand By Me is an example of a movie in which the kids smoked fake cigarettes (though I read that they were getting stoned in their hotel rooms, LOL). On the other hand, in the old days it wasn't unheard of for a kid to learn to smoke to make a movie -- Tatum O'Neal is a famous example. All that was before they knew that smoking was addictive, of course. There are lots of movies in which the kid just takes smoke into his mouth without inhaling, or just holds the cigarette. In ET, the teenage boys sit at a card table with a burning cigarette in an ashtray, but no one actually smokes. Sometimes more than one strategy is used, for example in The Outsiders the teens smoke but in a brief scene in which some preeteens are shown with cigarettes you can see that they're fake. A lot of that was in the days before smoking was known to be addictive and when teen smoking was considered acceptable. I can't imagine that they'd ask a kid to learn to smoke now if he doesn't already, but of course some kids might choose to on their own, and some already smoke.

I am an actor from hollywood. I can tell you what really happens. Yes, we have to learn how to smoke real cigarettes if the scripts require us to do so, even we don't smoke in real life.

Sometimes we even have to inhale the smoke to make it seem real. This is our life. No money is easy-earned money.

I'd go with Libby on this one... some might be smoking real cigs, but others will use herbal cigs.

William B Davies who played the Cancer Man/ Cig Smoking Man on the X Files used herbals.
