HHMMMM Actually it sounds like you have a Valve sticking. Pull off the valve cover, remove spark plug wires so the car will not start and have your buddy crank the engine while you look at the valvetrain. Check to make sure that every valve is going up and down smoothly. the slight knocking you are hearing might be the piston slightly "tapping" the valve shut because it stuck open just enough to get tapped. This would also cause your cylinder not to fire properly. Which would make the engine run rough and have a rumbly feeling to it and if the timing was just so that your car was relying on this cylinder to get the engine started it wouldn't do it but changing the distributor gave the valve time to close or all the wiggling jiggling let the valve close, either way it would start again and appear that the dist was somehow the problem.

You probley have no idea how long you were running 4 quarts low.If you check the spec.you may find that that is all it takes. The engine may have a bad rod from lack of lucubration witch means an engine replace. A few questions,is the engine leaking any were? The reason I ask if there are no leaks and that car is well maintained ( as it sounds like you do) it is not smoking or oil in the coolant .Did the station that did the last oil change forget the oil. Now that you have oil in the engine check that the filter is sealed and that drain plug on the oil pan is not dripping..You will see drops of oil under the car if leaking. Seems odd that a car lost 4 qt of oil in a short time..Check for service bulletins or recalls too. If you need an engine get a rebuilt. It is cheaper to install a rebuilt engine then to fix the one in the car, Good luck

did putting the other distributor in take away the knocking? Is it more like a knocking, or a ticking? Ticking could mean that you need to use a higher octane gas. Or you might need to get the engine treatment to clean your lifters Spark plugs are relatively cheap. and if you aren't real sure, start with the least expensive thing. The library will, in their "Reference Section" have a book called a "Chilton Manual" in the trouble shoot section it will give you very detailed step by step instructions on what to do.

Try using a more higher octane fuel like plus or premium. If that fails then you got a loose valve.
