I have 3 gold fish in a small tank (6 gallon). I just bought a 29 gallon tank today but I am waiting to give it 24 hr before I move them in. I am worried because they are hanging around the top of the tank I worry they are lacking oxygen. I do have a filter in the small tank, so why are they hanging around the top? Does a filter keep oxygen levels up? Thank you

I think it's awesome your moving them to a bigger tank. And if they are fancy the 29 gal should be good. Just make sure the filter is good. Also you should cycle the new tank before adding the fish. It decreases the stress levels. Since you seem to care about your fishes welfare, I am pleased to direct you to www.kokosgoldfish.com This is an excellent site that will help you take the best care of your fish. I wish you the best. Happy Holidays!

Very smart move buying the 29 gallon. A general rule of thumb is 10 gallons for every fish, otherwise you can stunt the growth, and they truly are very dirty fish.

The golfish do seem to have a low supply of air, that could be the problem, but the space issue could have been a huge contribution.Filters do not keep the oxygen levels up, I suggest spending an extra 10 dollars on an air pump so you can pump oxygen into your new tank. :)

the dimensions of the tank is the extremely difficulty. Having the 5 fish you chosen is a foul mix for this kind of small tank. the precedence is they are pushing aside too a lot waste and the tank won't be able to save up with it.frequently, a water replace would fix the precedence, yet you may't replace more beneficial than 50% of the water at a time. 50% is a drastic degree that would favor to easily be used at the same time as in severe circumstances. besides the indisputable fact that, i imagine that they are basically pushing aside too a lot waste for that length of tank and that you does not be able to thoroughly replace the water out sufficient as a fashion to save the ammonia factor down. the basically element which will fix your difficulty is a larger tank. i'd say that in the experience that they are nonetheless small as you're saying, a 20 gallon minimum will be required and 25 p.c. adjustments should be performed some times a week with that. Then, as they get larger, you may bypass them to a larger tank as you had planned. until eventually you're waiting to get a larger tank, you need to do 30-40 p.c. water adjustments each 3 days or so. beforehand including the water, make confident that the pH tiers are good interior the hot water because if the pH is more beneficial than .2 off from the water interior the tank, then the fish would die as they received't be able to adapt to the replace in pH quickly sufficient.

They are hanging around on top because the tank is too small for them. They should be OK once you get them in the 29. Just make you you cycle the tank or seed it somehow and make sure to do your weekly water changes and they should be OK. You should have at least a 40 gallon for 3 goldfish but if you change 50% of the water once a week and have extra filtration you should be fine.

Fish also gasp at the surface of the water when they are suffering from ammonia and since goldfish make a lot of mess, this could be the case. Whether it is an oxygen deficiency or too much ammonia, a water change would reduce much stress in the meantime.

They probably have oxygen deficiency but there is nothing to worry about as goldfish get it all the time. A filter won't help but if they need more air,get an airstone. perhaps they are hungry. Do not overfeed them, it is easy to do this as healthy fish are always hungry. there should be less problems when you move them to the bigger tank.

filters don't keep the oxygen levell up...surface movement of the water does. Are your goldfish gulping air...or are they just hungry?

sounds like they do need air. Is the water dirty to where the filter is clogged and the water cant circulate properly?
That might be the problem

Goldfish are pretty dirty. You might try changing 1/3 of the water.
