No. But why wouldn't you want the recipient to know who it's from (hate mail, ransom note, anthrax powder)? If you put no return address or a fake one, they will still know from the postmark the zip code it was mailed from and also date posted.

I live in the UK. Here there is no obligation to do it for private letters (not sure about business)

However I always put return address information on back of the envelope. That way it can be returned by by postal service if there is a problem delivering it. Also it helps the recipitant easily know my address to reply to without having to seek it out in an address book.

I live in the UK and have twice had international mail returned to me. The letters had both reached their respective countries (Spain and the Netherlands) and had been postmarked by the Spanish and Dutch postal services as undelivered and return to sender. That's proof that even international mail will be returned if it can't be delivered.
Thus I strongly recommend always giving a return address on any mail sent whatever its destination.

In the UK and in most states in the USA you do not HAVE to put your address on the back of letters, but it is always a good idea to do so. If the letter can not be delivered, strictly speaking the postal authorities are not allowed to open it to get the return address, so it may then lay unsent in the dead letter` box.

You don't have to put a return address but if the letter or whatever wasnt delivered then the return address means you would have it returned to you

well it's not completely mandatory but it helps if you put a return address in case it gets lost or the address you are sending it to is incorrect. That way they can always send it back to you. So it's probably in your best interest to always put a return address even though it's not required to have it sent out.

It is a good idea to do so because if the letter is not deliverable then the postal mail person will not be able to give you your letter back!
