I work as a .net developer. I see more of the well-financed companies moving into .net. For smaller companies on a tighter budget, java is certainly more widely used. Searching www.dice.com, for java yields almost 900 hits, while searching for .net yields around 600. Use of .net is also definitely increasing.

Java is better that .NET. But there are other fields also where u have good prospects of getting a job like mainframes, AS400, networking and so on..

Java, without a doubt! Java applets, as they are called are customizable to your applications. I have used them in each department to some extent.
