Those who 'discovered' America would be whose who were the first to live in America, and they are usually referred to as Native Americans (i.e. Indians). It is believed that they crossed a land bridge at or near the Bering Strait in present day Alaska from the Siberian region of present day Russia and migrated south.
In regards as to who discovered those already living in America, Lief Ericson planned to colonize an area that he named Vinland which is in present day Newfoundland, but he returned to Greenland without any settlement being established permanently.

well, some people will tell you the native americans did...but they were already here. then some will tell you christopher columbus, because he IS the first person to be documented to discover this land...but there is proof that Vikings came to america long before Columbus did...but they only reaked havoc, burning down villages and such. All the history books say Columbus discovered America, though, so the official answer is Christopher Columbus. America is named for Amerigo Vespucci, an Italian explorer.

Wrong category. You choose the question based on what subject the question and answer are related to, not who you are.
The first to discover the Americas, if you look at it from a Euro-ethnic standpoint, were Vikings from Northern Europe.
Who are the subjects of your debate?

Muslims. Way before Columbus. By the way, Columbus was lost, and coincidentally came to North America. Now that is NOT discovery. It is Lost.

I think that the crown of 'Who discovered America' lies with the so called 'Amerindians' from Asia.
But some are attempting to find older evidence. I think that the latest was the Chinese. I guess only God knows! lol
He gets the crown for making it in the first place!

well technically the nomads that came across the land bridge that is now underwater did, but if you mean like actual humans and not human ancestors then amerigo vesputci(spelling?) was the first and christopher columbus thought he found india(which is why indians(descendents of nomads) are called indians, but he really landed in america

How can you "discover" a place where thousands of people are living and flourishing and have been for hundreds of years?
It's like me breaking into your house "discovering" your cool new home theater and bringing it home with me.
