The SanDisk Sansa e250 has a MicroSD (a.k.a. TransFlash) memory slot on it. Though the player itself only has 2gb of storage, there are 512mb, 1gb, 2gb, and even 4gb MicroSD card available.
The store I work at had a sale (it ended today) on 1gb MicroSD for $19.98 each. I'm willing to bet that many places will have similar sales after the winter holiday period is over.
Alternatively, if you can find an MP3 player that uses Compact Flash cards, that would be better. Because they use the same pin-out as an internal hard drive, they have a huge upper limit in size (iirc 4 tb). They do make hard drive based compact flash cards that can theoretically contain many gigabytes.
Your third option would be a portable cd player that can play MP3 files. Why? It easier to carry several MP3 cds with you than it is to go home and delete/add new music to the player. Following this logic, the cd player has potentially unlimited storage, wheras a portable MP3 player doesn't.
