I went to SUNY BROCKPORT for teaching.
I think it was a good education. It was far cheaper than any of the Private schools -- and you get the same degree. If you go to a higher-end SUNY school you can get the prestige and respect of any private school (Geneseo, for example).
Schools are schools -- just find the right program that fits you.
CONS: Brockport seemed to get more and more strict about partying off campus. Cops are pretty active.
PROS: Beautiful women. OK price.

I attend(ed) SUNY Albany and I believe that the SUNY schools are appropriate for individuals who are 1. looking to save money and 2. going onto graduate educations
All SUNY schools have their specialties. SUNY Geneseo is great for education, Binghamton for science/engineering, Albany for meteorological studies, criminal justice/public policy and social welfare, etc. With a school of this size, it's what you make of it. You'll be in big lectures, so you have to make yourself noticed to get the letters of recommendation that you'll need later on. If you have extremely high aspirations for yourself, top 4 accounting firms, top 10 law firms, etc., it's a jumping off point but it will add some challenges because you'll be competing against students with your grades coming from better institutions.
Either way, I attend SUNY, and both of my sisters attended other 2 SUNY schools and we've been fairly happy with our education. I've recently been accepted to NYU law school, top 4, coming out of a SUNY school so I can confidently say that SUNY is like most colleges. You have to make the most of it and use the resources provided to you.

I went to a local community college then SUNY Albany, they're great for saving money, and Albany was very respected for my major, so if you play it right its fine, plus Albany was a fun party town.
